Wow.

Wow.

Or maybe more like phew.  I'm not sure if I feel more wow or phew.

But either way, it's been a doozy of a couple weeks.

I haven't blogged recently mainly because of the crazy life changes that have been going on (moving our home, moving my office, leaving our nanny and best buddy, starting a new daycare) but it's also because so much has happened that I find it overwhelming to even begin.

I'll do my best.

I was feeling pretty good going in to last week before the big move.  I'd been packing slowly but surely over the last month or so and our garage was steadily being filled up with boxes.  I was happy that our house didn't feel like there were boxes everywhere and Luke could keep some semblance of a normal life and home before we moved.

Last Tuesday Mike opened the door into the garage to find that the garage door was open.  I had left it open all night - when I came home from work I thought Mike was hopping in the car.  Plans changed and I just completely forgot to shut it. We quickly realized that many things were missing, boxes were opened with the contents messed up or missing, Luke's little Radio Flyer wagon was gone....I was so upset.  We have been robbed before (worse then, because they actually came into our house and took pretty much everything that was worth any money) but this time I couldn't even tell what was missing because everything was in boxes.  I originally thought much more was missing that what actually is, but that's little comfort when you feel invaded.  I will never understand why people do what they do.  Thankfully it wasn't any worse and we can replace what was taken.

Later that same day, I was running in to Home Depot to grab some paint to do some work on the new place the next day.  As soon as I walked up to the paint counter, Adelia called.  In the year plus that Luke has been in her care, she has never called me during the day.  I could tell as soon as I talked to her that something was wrong.

Luke fell when she was in the bathroom.  She heard him cry, but by the time she got out to the play area, he was acting ok, but he was bleeding pretty good from the back of his head.  I rushed there to get him so we could head to the ER.  (There's a whole other side-story there:  I had NO idea where to take him.  Note to other parents who are a ignorant as me: make sure you know where the ER is BEFORE something bad happens.)

He was acting ok, so we ran home to get Mike before going to the ER.  Let me tell you, this is the nicest ER you've ever seen.  I was expecting something horrible, but this place was amazing.  They greet you at the door, an escort walks you to check-in where a nurse is waiting for you.  They then walk you back to your own sick bay (that's the only way I can describe it) where you have a TV with all sorts of kiddie shows and movies to watch.  We got there at 3:30 and were headed home by 5:00.

One quick look and the nurses knew he needed some staples in his head.  Here is Bubby before staples:

They slathered some numbing cream on there for 30 minutes and then it was time for the staples.  It was pretty horrible for me but he was smiling and fine as soon as it was over.  They had to swaddle him and then a paramedic came in and held him down while the doctor put the staples in.  I will never forget the look in Bubby's eyes when he was crying and looking at me.  I was right in his face saying "it's ok" but I know my face said something else.  Like they say, kiddos are pretty resilient and he was laughing by the time we left.  Had a big dinner when we got home and slept like a champ.

Here he is after the staples.  Ouch.

The next night Mike and I were up until after 1 am getting things ready for the movers that were coming the next morning.  When I went to bed I was certain that the movers would take hours because we were so unorganized. I didn't get to do everything I wanted to but we were so tired.

However, the movers came at 7:40 am and we were completely moved by 11:30.  That included the drive out to Downers Grove.  It was officially the fastest move, even when I've moved within the city!

We got lots done and had our first night in the new house.  Here's Luke having a little take out Italian.

The next day Luke went to Callan's house for the last time.  We have had such a good experience with the nanny share.  I've read some pretty bad horror stories, but I think we lucked out.  I know we all will miss going to Callan's every day.  But we're going to do regular play dates so these boys don't forget each other!

We've used the long weekend to do a lot of unpacking and putting things in their place.  I'm already enjoying many things that suburban life offers....a trip to the grocery store is about 2 minutes away and there's no traffic.....drive to daycare and my office is 5 minutes....we can walk downtown or to the park....we have a yard with a deck... I will miss the city.  But we can visit.

Today was Luke's first day of school.  My oh my.  I was not ready for this!  He seems so grown up.  He is going to the same school his little friend Olivia goes to and I really really like the teachers.  They have "curriculum" and it really feels like he's going to school (well, school with a lot of toys anyway....).

We walked in this morning and he. was. in. heaven.  He held on to my legs for a minute but quickly he forgot he was scared and ran over to pick up some toys and a dinosaur.  He watched the other little boys and girls (there's another Luke in the class too - I told the teachers they could call our Luke Bubby if that makes things easier!).  He was talking up a storm and telling me how the dinosaur raaaawwwrrs.

He comes home every day with a report and some art projects.  I am a dorky first time mama and took some pictures of what they sent home.  It really made me feel good that the teachers were excited about his first day and did things to make it memorable.

Here is he taking a nap on his very own cot and finger painting.  We get to send a blankey and his lovey for naptime.  They said he laid right down and fell asleep!  He didn't sleep as long as normal, but hopefully that will come with time.

His handprints.... (can't get the darn picture to turn again)

And his daily report...

When I picked him up he toddled right over and gave me a big kiss and then promptly ran away to show me some of his toys.  He had such a good day.  He was tired, so hopefully this will translate into a later wake-up time!

Ok - sorry for the marathon post but I need to get updated so I can start posting more regularly (maybe??).

It's been a really nutty few weeks.  Highly stressful.  Very tiring.  Ultimately rewarding.

Wow.

and phew.

Good night!

  1. I still have janel's 'reports' from her day care in Lincoln Nebraska! What she ate, what she did, how many times she went potty. It was an awesome 'school' and you will cherish the daily reports.
