I'm only a little over a week late in posting about Luke's 16 month milestone....I'm actually feeling pretty good about that simply because I remembered!
He is changing by the day - and sometimes by the minute it seems - and I wanted to make sure to capture some of the things he surprises us with.
He's been jabbering for quite awhile and still does. He has full on conversations with himself while pretending to talk on the phone. The "phone" can be an actual iPhone or Blackberry, but mostly it's anything he can get his hands on. Keys, cars, shoes, pieces of food...you name it and that kid talks into it. I think Mike and I must use lots of hand gestures when we talk because he looks like a crazy man half the time when he's talking away.
He now has quite a few words and he's adding more by the day. Car, bubble, please, thank you (always accompanied by a smile and a head-nod), grape, banana, corn, wa-wa, Elmo, Gabba-Gabba. Of course, the average bear probably couldn't understand some of these, but he's pretty consistent with us so we know what he's trying to say. I love that we can communicate now!
He's also good at telling us if he wants something or not by shaking his head no. "Want some water?" Vigorous head-shake "No". "Want some chocolate milk?" Vigorous "Please!".
He loves Yo Gabba Gabba still and usually watches an episode snuggled in with me or Mike first thing in the morning. He is getting to be a very good snuggler. He's also a HUGE fan of Toy Story. I'm pretty sure he'd watch the entire movie at once if we let him.
He still has a night-time bottle but we will cut that out sometime (soon I suppose). I know I need to do this, but he turns into me and cuddles his lovey every night when I give him his bottle. I don't want to give that up! Some very good friends of ours told us that their pediatrician told them when having the same conversation about giving up the bottle, "You've never seen someone in college with a bottle have you? They'll give it up at some point and they'll be just fine". So I'm going with that for now. I'll never have these days back with him so I'll take all of the love and nighttime hugs I can get.
He's doing pretty well at daycare, although he does have a hard time with us leaving. It breaks my heart every time (and Mike's too) but I know he's fine after a short time. I have so many thoughts on daycare it deserves it's own post. But in short, he's doing really good and I think he's happy.
He is a good sleeper and loves his bed. He has not learned how to climb out yet, but definitely could. The other day I put him in there to play while I was putting his clothes away and he kicked his leg up over the side and was pulling himself up. I quickly just pulled him out and redirected him, hoping that if I didn't act like it was a big deal, he'd forget that he did it. We'll see how long that works. Tonight he climbed up the outside of the crib as I was getting him undressed for bath time. A crib tent or toddler bed might be in our near future.
He does love to go to bed and says "nigh nigh" a LOT around bedtime. He rarely cries when going to bed and usually just plays and hugs (wrestles) his Eeyore for a bit before getting comfy and falling asleep.
He absolutely adores anything soft that he can hug and kiss. He buries his face is soft blankets and hugs any stuffed animal he finds. He also loves to have his back and legs tickled softly.
Cars are a favorite - he drives them around on the floor or around the furniture. He also likes to have a car on his highchair so he can play with it when he's done eating. He's very intent when he plays and it's fun to watch him do things with such purpose.
One of his teachers today told me that Luke is such a good boy. She said that he really is happy and helpful and is such a good kid during the day. That makes me so happy and proud of our boy. There are lots of times when he shows us his temper a stubbornness at home (and man oh man, does this kid have a temper) but I'm glad he seems to be doing well at school.
Some pictures Mike took this week as they were getting ready to leave for school. I think he's kind of a ham, don't you?
